COLOUR GUIDE

How to colour your hair at home?

On this site, we have collected the most relevant information on how to colour your hair at home.

Decisions to make before colouring

Before you start colouring, you have to find the right colour for you. We have made a colour guide with a few tips for choosing.

You can read it here: Which hair colour suits me?

Hair reacts differently on hair colour and there are multiple factors to think about. Because of this, you can’t depend on the exact same result as the one on the box.

We recommend to use the NATURIGIN hair colours for the following purposes:

  • To maintain your natural hair colour and cover greys
  • To colour your hair darker
  • To colour your hair 2-3 shades lighter

If you want to colour your hair darker:

If you can’t choose between two shades, we recommend you to choose the lightest.

It is always easier to colour your hair darker than to lighten it. In case you want it even darker afterwards, you can use a darker colour without problems.

If you want to lighten your current hair colour:

It is important to remember that the lighter you colour your hair, the more the warm undertone found in the hair will be exposed. Because of this, you can end up with a reddish or orange tint in your hair if you colour more than 2-3 tones lighter than your natural hair colour.

If you want to make a big change from for example brown to light blonde, we recommend you to go to a professional hair dresser.

Buy enough hair colour:

If you have thick and/or long hair, we recommend you to buy two boxes of hair colour. This way you make sure to have enough colour for all of your hair.

We have collected our expert knowledge in a short video beneath this to show you how to colour your hair at home.

Colour Guide

1. 24-48 hours before hair colouring

Before you colour your hair make sure to do a patch test to avoid unexpected allergic reactions.

  1. Use cotton swabs to dab a small amount of the product onto your skin in an innocuous place, for example behind your ear or at the nape of your neck.
  2. Remember to do this with both the colour cream and activator, however, you do not have to mix the two just yet.
  3. Wait 24 to 48 hours and check for a reaction to the two components.
  4. If you see any irritation on the skin you should refrain from colouring your hair further.
  5. If your skin has not reacted to the patch test you are all set to continue your hair colouring adventure and should not experience any allergic reactions.

Notice! You should not colour your hair if any of these bulletpoints apply to you:

  • You previously had a rash on your face,
  • You have a sensitive irritable and damaged scalp,
  • You have previously had a reaction after hair colouring,
  • You have previously had a reaction to a temporary tattoo with black henna.

2. Preparation for hair colouring:

Tip: If it’s the first time you are going to colour your hair at home, you can pair up with a friend, who can help you make sure the colour covers all of your hair.

  1. Cover your clothes with a towel to avoid damaging them.
  2. Apply a thick and oily cream at the hairline, ear and neck to protect the skin from colouring.
  3. Wash your hands and put on the gloves provided.
  4. Empty the tube with colour cream (A) into the activator (B) bottle.
  5. Shake the bottle until it is completely mixed.

Notice: The colour of the mixture of colour cream and activator will be different from the colour of the final result.

Go to step 3 if you want to colour regrowth.

Go to step 4 if it is the very first time you colour your hair.

3. Colouring of regrowth

  1. Start with unwashed and dry hair for the best result.
  2. Apply half of the mixture from the activator bottle on all regrowth (by the roots) by separating the hair on your scalp. Make sure all regrowth is covered with the colour.
  3. Let it work for 20 minutes.
  4. Now apply the remaining mixture in the rest of your hair.
  5. Let it work for 10 minutes more.
  6. Apply a little water to make the mixture a little foamy, massage your hair and scalp and rinse your hair thoroughly with lukewarm water afterwards.

4. Colouring of none-coloured hair:

  1. Start with unwashed and dry hair for the best result.
  2. Apply the colour mixture from the activator bottle by the roots and work towards the ends.
  3. Massage your hair and scalp to make sure to get a perfect covering of the colour mixture.
  4. Let it work for 30 minutes.
  5. Apply a small amount of water to make the mixture a little foamy, massage your hair and scalp and rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water afterwards.

5. To finish the hair colouring:

  1. Apply the “After Colour Treatment” (C) in your hair and massage.
  2. Let it work for 2 minutes and rinse your hair.
  3. The hair colouring is now complete!

Tip: To make sure the hair stays healthy with lots of shine you can use our Colour Lock Conditioner to complete the colouring process. Use it regularly in combination with our Colour Lock Shampoo to keep the colour shiny and beautiful.
